Today’s review is another thriller and I actually heard about it from booksandlala on Youtube! You can click here to find her channel. I love her recommendation videos and My Lovely Wife happened to be featured in one of them. Samantha Downing’s writing really hooked me into the story, and I have to admit I was invested in the characters unlike most thrillers I read. I hope you all enjoy this review and make sure to check out the link below to read a synopsis and purchase they book if it intrigues you!
Initial Thoughts
I had high expectations for this book because of how high I regard anything booksandlala recommends and I wasn’t disappointed! This was pitched a psychological thriller and I found myself flipping through the chapters because of how fast paced the dialogue was. If you haven’t read the synopsis the plot describes a husband and wife who have two kids and kill people as a “hobby”. I’ve read some disturbing thrillers before but this one was especially twisted. I’m not sure if it was Downing’s writing that kept me hooked, but I become invested in the characters stories despite the situations they found themselves in.
The Twist
The build up to the “big reveal” was well written in my opinion. For a moment I started to think I knew where things were going but Downing would then steer the characters in a completely different direction. I think this is what I enjoy most about thrillers- there are so many twists and turns and nothing is really what it seems. Even for a serial thriller reader like myself, I was definitely intrigued from beginning to end!
My Rating
Overall Thoughts
I don’t get too invested in thrillers because of the content, but I found myself intrigued by these characters! I was definitely disturbed by the circumstances depicted but I think Downing did a fantastic job of giving her characters layers that slowly unraveled by the end of the novel. One of the most interesting aspects of the novel was that it was difficult to pin point the main “villain” of the story. Every character had their own baggage and moral issues which made the reading experience even more interesting. At times you wanted to root for a certain character but then information is revealed that keeps you guessing until the very end. I definitely recommend this to all my psychological thriller fans out there. There is a “domestic” element to the story but it’s not as heavy as a book like Big Little Lies. You can read my review of that here. Overall, I enjoyed this, and it definitely was a wild ride of twists and turns! I hope you guys enjoyed today’s review, and be sure to leave a comment below if you read this book before. I’d love to hear your thoughts:) Feel free to leave your thriller suggestions as well, I’m always looking for new recommendations! I’ll be back soon with more bookish content.
