Over the past couple of months, I have seen so many people talking about this book. I’ve seen some people rave about and it and others say it missed the mark. Initial Thoughts
I didn’t have many expectations for this book as I don’t typically read Historical Romance. This is also considered to be a fantasy novel which drew me in initially as I am an avid fantasy reader. Unfortunately I didn’t go in with a neutral opinion as “booktok” had spoiled character names and some parts of the plot before I was able to read it. This didn’t affect my reading experience too much, but I do wish I didn’t see as many spoilers before I formed my own opinions of the novel.
Favorite Moments
- Schwab’s Writing Style: I’ve never read a novel by Schwab before and I have to say I love her writing. There was a balance of poetic flowery language with jarring dialogue that made the novel fast paced and not winded.
- “The Darkness”: I won’t say much about this character because *spoilers* but I was so intrigued with his role in the story. The banter between Addie and The Darkness was well crafted and at times I wished he was mentioned more in each chapter.
- The Concept of “Leaving a Mark“: This is generally the main premise for the entire novel and it really made me think about my own impact on the world. Addie’s story is obviously fiction but I really felt her frustration as she lived year after year not being able to be remembered.
- Clothing/Costumes: I studied historical costumes in college, so I always find it interesting when authors have characters that move through multiple time periods. The novel begins at 1714 France which drastically differs from 20th century New York as far as clothing trends go. I enjoyed seeing how pieces of Addie’s wardrobe changed from year to year but especially enjoyed her outfits in the early 1900’s.

Overall Thoughts
Overall, I enjoyed this novel! I see how social media could be divided about it as there were some characters and plot points I could have done with out. As a whole I enjoyed the story, but more than that the theme of leaving a mark on the world after you’re gone. I hope you guys enjoyed this review and decide to give the book a read!
